Announcement – Long Version
PropellerSafey.com announces the release of a series of nine training videos on use of the U.S. Coast Guard Boating Accident Report Database (BARD).
- Four videos are introductory
- Four videos focus on boat builders using BARD to Post Sale monitor accidents involving their boats.
- One video covers the worksheets, tools, and other aids to assist boat builders in using these methods.
It is our hope boat builders will take this opportunity to identify boat accidents involving their vessels, learn from them, and take action to prevent or mitigate these accidents.
Very basic techniques are provided for searching BARD along with more complex techniques for identifying accidents normal techniques may miss.
Progressively more complex techniques illustrated include:
- Alphabetical ordering of the boat Manufacturer column for quickly finding some accidents belonging to a specific boat builder.
- Alphabetical ordering of the Hull Identification Number (HIN) column for viewing MIC codes to find additional accidents involving a specific boat builder.
- Boolean searching (AND/OR searching) of the boat Manufacturer column in combination with the Hull Identification Number (HIN) column for a specific boat builder.
- How to identify spelling and other variants of the boat manufacturer’s name, MIC code, popular boat models, and boat name that may lead to identifying additional accidents by a specific boat builder.
- Incremental searches in which spelling errors and other variants are used to search the boat manufacturer, boat model, boat name, or Hull ID number prefix for additional accidents involving boats built by a specific boat builder.
- Searching the redacted narrative for possible mention of the boat manufacturer
- How to simultaneously search Event 1, Event 2, and Event 3 for a specific type of boating accident
Supporting materials include worksheets, a chart showing the process a boat builder can use to Post Sale monitor their boats in the field using BARD and other sources, and a paper on BARD search strategies.

Public Comment Letter to U.S. Coast Guard National Boating Safety Advisory Council 104th Meeting November 5th 2020.
We submitted a public comment letter announcing the BARD videos to NBSAC on 21 October 2020 via regulations.gov in advance of their 5 November 2020 meeting.
Public Comment During NBSAC104
I personally spoke to the NBSAC members during the webinar during the public comment period announcing these videos and materials, pointing out our public comment letter which was distributed to them by the Coast Guard, and urged them to help spread the word about these materials to boat builders.
My comments during the public comment section were delivered from this script.
