Charlie Hutton & Kali Gorzell : it’s been 3 years
Its now been three years since the tragic propeller fatalities of Charlie Hutton near the Isle of Wight in the U.K., and Kali Gorzell in Texas on Friday July 20, 2012. Both youth showed incredible promise, and both lives were snuffed out at a young age. Charlie, the promising field hockey player was taken at 14, Kali, whose friends coined the phrase “Live Like Kali”, lost her life at age 16. Its hard to believe its been three years.
We covered these accidents at:
- Charlie Hutton Killed by Boat Propeller Near Isle of Wight
- Kali Gorzell: Texas Girl Killed in Aransas Pass Boat Propeller Accident
The accidents happened at almost the same time, half a world apart.
Charlie Hutton’s brothers went on to raise money in his name for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), the charity funded group that responded to his accident and daily rescues many people in the U.K.. His brothers raised funds by participating in many athletic events (running and biking to call attention to their cause) and are continue to raise funds for RNLI.
Kali Gorzell’s friends took to, Live Like Kali (LLK), and have bettered their lives. What better tribute to this young woman than that. It addition, the Texas State Legislature passed a bill honoring her life.
We appreciate all who remember these, and other fine youth who lost their lives to boat propellers.
This year, I especially thank a friend that reminded me of their passing as I myself had become too caught up in the things of everyday life and forgotten myself.
Gone, but not forgotten.
